This is a MUST READ for any writer of fiction in any genre I ve read many books about writing and attended several courses including an MA but this book because it s in this series I suppose starts at the very beginning and misses nothing out the things it s taken for granted that we ll know which we I often don t So for instance it s the only book about writing in which I ve found a definition of what literary fiction is a book that delves deeply psychologically into its characters a book that addresses subjects that affect the human race a book that experiments with language and the only book about writing that makes sensible suggestions about how to conduct the writing life for instance read a poem aloud to yourself each day which has had the effect of making me so very much aware of how to create atmosphere how many meanings the same words can have the rhythm of language the delight in what words can create need I go on

I wentthrough all the books on my bookshelfand I pulled out my favorite creativewriting books so some of these are like memoir some of these are kind ofvisuals you know like visualartistic creative writing books some ofthem have character exercises and are like craft based so I have aboutlike eight books I think that I m goingto show you today and let s go ahead andjust dive right in alright the firstbook I want to show you today is calledstill writing and it s by Danny Shapiroso still writing is part memoir partlook into the creative process so stilla writing is a book that I like to kindof keep on my bedside table and after along day of either being successful atbeing creative and writing and editingor after a particularly difficult daywhen I m not feeling like much of acreator or a creative minded individualI like to sit down and read this beforebed because Danny Shapiro s like outlookon creators in general and kind ofliving a creative lifestyle I find to beextremely not only down to earth butinspiring as well so this is not a bookthat I would sit down and just devour inone sitting this is a book that I haveenjoyed it taking my time with slowlyreading through it does have some adviceon craft but I d say this is of akind of look into the life of a creativeminded individual so I absolutely lovestill writing alright the secondCreative Writing book I m showing youtoday is similar to the first and thatis bird by bird by Anne Lamottnow this was a book that I wasintroduced to when I enterbird college now my first year ofcollege I was not even an English majorI was an euine science major so mysopho year of college when Iswitched from euine science into anEnglish major field I heard about thisbook bird by bird and I absolutely fellin love with it so I d have to say thatthe most memorable aspect of this bookand what it taught me was to see thebeauty in what Anne Lamott calls shittyfirst drafts so when you are a newwriter or even if you re an experiencedwriter and you are working on a firstdraft it can be extremely frustratingyou can feel self conscious you knowwhen you see the words on the page andthey re not flowing in the way that youhad hoped they would you know the wordsand the story doesn t come to you uiteas easily as you thought it was going toI know the frustration at looking backon work that you thought was amazing andthen realizing how terrible it actuallyis and the fear of writing badly used toreally hold me back I would not write inorder to avoid writing badly but then bydoing that I was never learning anythingI was never growing as a writer or as acreative individual so after readingthis and learning that there is magicand beauty in a shitty first draft likethat is the first step to gettinganywhere is writing that really badfirst draft this book taught me that soif you re somebody that is strugglingwith you know confidence and you need aboost of creative confidence I woulddefinitely recommend bird by bird byAnne Lamott okay now these next threebooks I m going to lump all togetherbecause they re within the same I don tknow brand branding I guess I could sayand that is the writing and publishingfor dummies books so I have writingfiction for dummies which was the firstwriting for dummies book that I got andthen I hadof self publishing for dummies which Ihave used so many times that this bookis starting to get like smushed andwrinkled because I have referred back toit on so many occasions and then thethird and final book that I have by thisbranding is writing young adult fictionfor dummies now all of these have beenextremely helpful not only are thesebooks pretty big so you get a lot inthem but they have really good advice sothey have advice from people that are inthese fields people that have experiencelet me jump into let s just jump rightinto writing fiction and I will kind ofread out a few of these chapters so ithas getting ready to write fiction ispart one you know uestions what makes agood story what are some basics when itcomes to telling a story how do you findyour audience how do you write a greatnovel how do you manage your timethere s an entire chapter on buildingyour story world on creating compellingcharacters so you can see that there isjust like so much really good amazinginformation how to analyze charactersscrutinize your story structure how toedit your scenes there are two chapterson editing here so for structure and forcontent and then you can go on togetting published and that s when Iwould jump into the self publishing fordummies now this one is awesomeit covers budgeting copywritingmarketing so many really really valuablepoints and advice not only in this bookbut in all of these writing for dummiesbooks I would highly recommend these ifyou are looking for of like ahow to manual with a lot of good adviceand tips and tricks when it comes toactually crafting a book versus the kindof personal stories and theconfidence building side of writing Ihighly recommend these I absolutely lovethem okay this next book is one of myfavorites and I believe I have talkedabout it before on my channel and thatiswonderbook the illustrated guide tocreating imaginative fiction by JeffVandermeer and this book is gorgeous ithas a very like fantastical steampunkkind of vibe to it which I really enjoyand you can absolutely use this book forwhatever genre that you might be writingyou know you don t have to be writingsteampunk or fantasy you can be writinga horror a thriller a contemporary aromance whatever it is that you rewriting this book can really come inhandy and I want to say that one of myfavorite things about this book is thatit has so many visuals I am a veryvisual learner it s difficult for me tojust like open a craft book and justread blocks of text I like visuals Ilike illustrations I like things to bebroken up so that there s a lot ofvariety and it s exciting to continuelooking at it and reading it and thisbook definitely has that the way thatthis book works is it gives you funIllustrated examples of craft and advicefor something that s a little bit out ofthe box and out of the ordinary I d saypick up the wonder book I absolutelylove it I have to say it s probably oneof my very favorite creative writingbooks okay next up going along the samelines of like color and illustration andbright happy fun pages is juicy pensthirsty paper by sark and I mentionedthis on Instagram when I read it down atthe bottom it says gifting the worldwith your words and stories and creatingthe time and energy to actually do it sothis is a really fun book because sheactually hand writes everything andcolors everything and then they likescan the pages and turn it into a bookso you ll see that she actually handwrites all of this and she illustratesit so there are so many colors whenyou re flipping through here like lookat how much fun this is see and it alsohas exercises for you so it ll ask youuestions and help you set goals foryourselfwhat are some titles that describe youand it s just so bright and colorful andcheery and I absolutely adore this bookand you can absolutely sit down and readthrough this in an hour or two Iactually did that and I want to say amonth ago I just sat down one night witha cup of tea and I cuddled up in bed andI read this whole book just because it ssuch a feel good feel good kind of thatboost of creative freedom and creativeconfidence type book and that s what Ireally enjoy about it but also if youwant to take your time you can you knowfill out all of the exercises that areincluded in this book like right here itsays fast list of reasons you don t feellike writing and I and what I wroteyears ago and I got this book was Icould do something else instead mywriting isn t good enough which issomething I talked about with bird bybird by animal a lot I wouldn t writebecause I thought it wouldn t be goodand then I don t know what to say nextso this is a book that I ve had for manyyears I remember picking it up at Barnes Noble when I was there with my dad Iwas like scanning through the writingbooks and I saw this on the shelf it shard to see in this light and it was socolorful on the Shelf I just knew thatthis was a book that I wanted to pick upso again if you are of a visualperson like look at how beautiful thatis I absolutely love this book if youlike visuals if you re looking forsomething that has a little bit of youknow advice and crafts but is also basedand rooted very deeply in boosting yourcreative confidence and helping you youknow achieve creative freedom andreleasing that creator that s inside ofyou I highly recommend picking up thisbook you will not be disappointed by itokay the eighth and final book I m goingto show you today is the emotionthesaurus a writer s guide to characterexpressions and it s funny because mysister and her fiance gave this book tome for Christmas 2016 so two Christmasesago and their pup their dog got into thepackage and kind of chewed on it beforeI was able to get ahold of it so you cansee look at all those like tooth marksall over this book it s like scratchedup everywhere you can see that but theemotion of the source is awesome andthis is one of those like manual crafttype books that is really helpful whenyou re actually in the midst of draftingso many of these other books might behelpful when you re between projects orwhen you need confidence to launchinto a new writing project this is onethat I use and that you can use whileyou re actually working on something sothe emotion thesaurus let s go throughit it has a whole list of emotions thatyour characters can feel and then itgoes through the definition of them thephysical signs the internal sensationsthat somebody might experience likefeeling these things and it s reallyhelpful if you re someone that has notfelt these emotions yourself but you retrying to truthfully and realisticallywrite a character that is experiencingthese emotions all right so one of themin here is guilt and personally andunfortunately I m somebody that hasexperienced a lot of this in my life butif you are not somebody that personallyfeels guilty about a lot of things youknow you don t guilt yourself all thetime like some of us do then you mightnot be extremely experienced with howguilt affects you and how it makes youinteract with the world around mephysical signs of hurting are loweringyour gaze shifting about blushingreacting defensively keeping it adistance talking too much or too fast sothose are the physical signals that yourcharacter could be exhibiting if they refeeling guilt some of the internalsensations upset stomach tight chestpain in the back of the throat this isall from guilt mental responses cues ofacute or long term guilt so this issomething that really comes in handywhen you are in the middle of draftingand you need you know a uick referenceto okay my character is feeling reallypressed I don t have a lot of experiencewith these feelings how do I write thischaracter and a realistic and believableway so then you turn to the page herethat covers you know the feelings ofdepression you read about it you knowyou d be able to do your research andthen write that character with believability you know it would feellike that character is actuallyexperiencing the true feelings ofdepression rather than a surface levelbecause you don t truly understand it soagain the emotion thesaurus is one thatI would absolutely recommend to those ofyou that are in the midst of writingyour first draft or maybe you re aboutto go back through and do a second draftand you want to bring your characters tolife this would be a great one for youto pick up okay everybody those are myeight favorite creative writing books atthis point I know that I will pick up here and there and then I m surethat I will share you know round 2 part2 of my favorite creative writing booksat a later day when he add of thoseto my shelf I truly hope that youenjoyed this video again I do have tosay that my favorites like if I had topick just a few out of the 8 I showedyou today I would say wonder book isabsolutely one of my favorites probablyjuicy pens thirsty paper and then alsoone of the like writing fiction orwriting young adult fiction for dummiesthose would probably be my veryfavorites because I like a mixture ofyou know memoir style that gives you creative confidence mixed in withsomething that is like tried and truefacts and tips and tricks when itactually comes to the craft of writing anovel and being a creative individual soplease let me know down below if youhave tried out any of these books andlet me know which one is your favoriteand if your favorite is not on this listagain please let me know in the commentsbelow so that I can check it out andhopefully add it to my bookshelf thank you guys
