It was a real struggle to get into this book There s a long very pompous introduction about how summarizing a bunch of people s private autobiographies as is done here in the case of Germans born during the Weimar Republic is the one true Best Way to Write History That authorial self regard was off putting enough but it s especially ludicrous when the techniue is in service of such insights as The East Prussians were a heavyset people slow and ponderous who rolled their r s or The texts suggest however that advancing age also brought increasing health problems or The parents ideological outlook and political engagement largely governed the responses of their offspring Portraits like that of the K chy family hint at how strongly such influences shaped the lives of the children with the referred to picture being a bewilderingly vacant picture of dead eyed parents and child Conclusions that is seem to be decided on before random snippets of some person s memoir are cherry picked to ostensibly support the point Meanwhile the prose style is academic with lots of perfectly normal things deemed paradoxical seemingly pseudo intellectual for I think rain on your wedding day is ironic and uses of the word caesura than I have otherwise encountered in my entire lifeAll that said the underlying narratives of and self reflections by everyday people in a tumultuous period in history are interesting enough even if you know all the protagonists will survive said tumult in order to write decades later memoirs It might have made sense for Jarausch to feature exclusively on the youth and young adulthood for the Weimar children since it seems to be what interests him most the first third of its subjects lives through the late 1940s comprises the first two thirds of the book with the subseuent decades breezed through at a much faster pace Even in the lightly covered years though nuggets of interesting personal detail offer texture to German history
