CHARACTERS ß Duplicity Er begins uncovering a number of leads was Max's incredible wealth the motive Had his shady business practices finally caught up with him Or was it a stalker with a dangerous obsessionDevoted friends rally around gentle sweet Alissa as she is left to mourn the loss of her husband a The detective story can be a tired old genus but Duplicity is a worthy and worthwhile read Its strength lies in the dual perspective offered in that each chapter is narrated by either the detective or by the criminal whose identity only emerges gradually The detective s own story is complex what with his completing a year of mourning for his wife of many years professional dissatisfaction and resentment of the colleague who has undeservedly received the promotion Solving this crime becomes personal and culminates in a turning point in his life The criminal s narrative includes much self disclosure giving us the portrait of the hurt person who then hurts others or the victim becoming victimizerAfter the detective establishes the case and the criminal gives the needed backstory and the reader has put the pieces together the story becomes like a chess game with moves by each narrator brought out by their actions and reactions This turns into a chase narrative at the end leading to the climax But not all the pieces fit together The criminal denies guilt for one of the murders A final chapter by a third narrator provides the surprising answer that explains events and wraps up all the loose endsI d have given this story 5 stars except for this surprise ending It had the feel of a deus ex machina the device used by too many ancient Greek dramas whereby the humans complicate the situation until a god comes down via a crane to resolve matters without prior hint that this was to happen In some stories it takes the form of the character waking up to find It was a dream all along In the present case the introduction of the third narrator seemed abrupt leaving the reader me unprepared for the last twistI appreciated that although the story dealt with some shocking stuff what crime story doesn t there was not a lot of gratuitous sex and violence The character descriptions were well articulated not only of the two main characters but also of the several minor characters each narrator described Of particular interest was the contempt expressed by one of the attractive female characters for those whose interest she aroused Is skin deep beauty only good for duping others Other issues embedded in this narrative included the nature versus nurture influence
