Steve Bunk ↠ 0 read & download free download å PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook ↠ Steve Bunk free read Goliath Staggered · PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook Ghfare despite its protection from just that fate by the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act Big Oil needed to get these “megaloads” of machinery from Asia to Canada’s tar sands to build the facilities that would mine and process crude oil for the proposed XL PipelineLaughy and Hendrickson who were in late middle age sparked opposition in Idaho that was mirrored by a grassroots campaign in Montana Goliath Staggered recounts the drama that unfolded in these two states week by week from 201 In our travels we ve been up and down Route 12 through Idaho several times and each time we re struck by the stunning beauty of the Lochsa River the towering trees and the wilderness through which the route winds itself We ve even dry camped alongside the riverWhen I picked up a copy of Goliath Staggered in a bookstore in Clarkston Washington I was intrigued by the battle local residents waged to try to prevent megaloads from moving down Route 12 These huge shipments 20 feet tall semi trucks are maybe 15 or 16 20 feet wide 300 feet long and weighing in at 300000 500000 pounds threatened to stop traffic destroy roads and bridges reuire shearing trees and foliage and necessitate building huge pull out areas where the loads could wait for traffic to clear As if this weren t enough the loads were accompanied by so many support vehicles their convoy was about a mile longThe few people living along the route and other interested conservation groups decided they were not going to let this Wild and Scenic River Corridor become a high and wide corridor which would only serve to support the tar sands fields in Canada Should be a riveting story don t you think David versus Goliath to be sure Sadly the book doesn t give the story the dramatic play it deserves After a first chapter describing a meeting we can t fully appreciate because we don t yet know the full situation or key players we re immediately a little lost A few chapters of narrative tell us what we re about to read in a way that sounds like a movie trailer and by chapter four it s as if the author himself has given up trying to make clear sense of what was a very complicated drawn out series of mostly legal maneuverings As I assembled the narrative it became clear that a succession of datelines was the best way to not only order the seuence of events but to show the interplay of strategies is how author Steve Bunk explains his reason for giving us the story in dated chronological summaries that structure the rest of the bookThis might have been a good idea if it had worked as Bunk planned showing an interplay of strategies but it didn tBunk clearly was on the side of the opponents of the megaloads which was fine with me so his attempt to keep a journalist s objectivity only served to puncture the dramatic tension like a needle through a balloonInstead of reading the story of what happened I felt as if I was reading his notes Perhaps he wanted to get the book finished and gave up trying to fashion an interesting narrative from what must have been massive amounts of research With dozens of individuals mentioned along the way Bunk could have at least given us a guide like a cast of characters so we could keep them straight Too often he assumes we remember well enough to attach names to titles and responsibilities This is an amazing story It s tragic it got lost in the minutia A story telling narrative would have served the reader better than these journal like entries My husband and I read every night We recommend it if you re looking for something to lull you into dreamland
